16 October 2026
Program
Overview
Discover the Japanese art of Kokedama at Magic Garden, where nature, creativity, and mindful making come together in a hands-on botanical experience.
Taking place on 16 October 2026, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM, the Kokedama Workshop invites participants to explore the traditional Japanese practice of creating living plant sculptures. Meaning “moss ball” in Japanese, Kokedama is a gardening technique in which a plant’s roots are carefully shaped and wrapped in moss and natural twine, creating a beautiful piece of living art that can be displayed at home.
Throughout the workshop, participants will be guided step by step by Magic Garden facilitators. From preparing the plant and shaping its root base to working with moss and securing the final form with natural twine, the experience introduces the essential techniques behind Kokedama in an approachable and creative way.
Beyond learning a new craft, the workshop encourages participants to slow down, work with their hands, and connect more closely with nature. The tactile experience of handling plants, moss, and other natural materials creates space for curiosity, focus, and mindful creativity.
Participants will also discover the ideas and traditions behind Kokedama and learn how this simple botanical practice transforms an everyday plant into an expressive living sculpture. Along the way, facilitators will share practical guidance on how to care for Kokedama, helping participants understand what their plants need to continue growing and thriving at home.
No previous gardening or crafting experience is required. The workshop is designed to be accessible and enjoyable for anyone curious about plants, creative practices, or nature-based learning. Each participant can work at their own pace while adding personal touches to their creation, making every Kokedama unique.
At the end of the workshop, participants will leave with their own handcrafted Kokedama to take home—a living reminder of an afternoon spent learning, creating, and connecting with the natural world.
The Kokedama Workshop at Magic Garden offers more than a creative activity. It is an opportunity to discover a cultural tradition, develop a new hands-on skill, and experience how working with nature can inspire creativity, patience, and a deeper appreciation for living things.
